Portable Solar Power
We are a mobile society. We travel farther in an hour
than our ancestors did in a day. We have made an issue of
getting away from our very demanding jobs and seeking
rest and relaxation in more isolated areas. The
availability of portable solar power units has now opened
up limitless possibilities for those people who need the
small luxuries that these units can
provide.
We want to be in clean air and sunshine away from
traffic jams and work demands, but we, understandably,
want to bring some ‘creature comforts’ with
us.
As campers and hikers, our parents carried either no
electrical amenities or they were forced to lug batteries
around and replace them on a too often schedule.
Today’s technology of portable solar power allows us
the freedom to explore the wilderness without being cut
off from the comforts of home.
A small portable solar panel can power and charge
your cell phone, radio, flashlights, and camping lights
without the hassle of extra
batteries.

The home solar power systems utilize a combination of
fixed or movable solar panels in arrays, large banks of
deep cell batteries, and a special apparatus to convert
the direct electrical current (DC), generated by the
solar array, into and alternating current (AC) that can
then be used by our home
appliances.
Much of the bulky parts of this system can be
discarded when you are developing portable solar
power.
The amount of electricity required for our ‘roughing
it’ outings is significantly less, as we are not bringing
energy hungry appliances with us. The need for
electricity is minimal, consisting most often of a cell
phone charge and maybe a laptop charge, with a little
extra to light the dark nights and keep flashlights
working.
The lights are usually of the LED (Light Emitting
Diode) type using only a miniscule amount of electricity.
When used in quantity, these LED lights can provide
sufficient light to power flashlights or see comfortably
until we are ready to go to sleep. This small amount of
electricity can be generated by a portable solar power
system during the daylight hours.
To build a solar panel, the average person would need
only to find a supplier of the initial plans and have
access to the components. The portable solar power system
is a good starting project for the beginner. A solar
panel can be built in a weekend by most hobbyists
familiar with basic handyman skills and basic power
tools. Because the portable system bypasses the need to
transform the electric current from DC to AC, the small
appliances can be powered directly from the solar panels
or their own internal batteries can be charged from the
solar panel.
The solar panel itself doesn’t need to be very large
as the draw on it would be quite small. The small size of
the portable solar power system, in combination with the
less demand and not as much necessary equipment, allows
portable solar power to make our ‘get away’ times more
comfortable and less stressful than ever
before.
