How to Make
a Windmill

The energy of the wind, harnessed to generate
electricity, can be a limitless, free energy source to supply
your home.
The advancement of technology, and in particular
the simplicity now of how to make a windmill in the last decade
has surpassed all advances in the previous 100 years when it
comes to the development of renewable energy
resources.
Once used to pump water, saw wood and grind
grain, the wind mill has stepped into the present with the
ability to generate electricity by the use of a wind
turbine.
The fact that the earth revolves in one
direction at a steady pace, dragging the atmosphere along at a
slower pace, give rise to the phenomenon of wind. The air
around us moves in a steady eastward although turbulent
direction. Assisted by the thermodynamics of bodies of water
and high and low pressure areas the air is almost always on the
move somewhere.

To take advantage of this movement, modern home
owners can now install their own wind
turbine.
If your home is located in an area where you
have access to an open space, you can install a wind turbine
either on the top of your home or nearby. The turbine needs to
be away from air disturbing obstacles such as tall trees. With
a steady, even slight breeze, the blades of the newer high
efficiency turbines can turn the rotor and generate electricity
for you.
Like the similar solar systems, this electricity
is generated in a direct current, and must be converted to an
alternating current before it can be utilized by your household
appliances.
If you have plans to install an energy source at
your remote cottage, a wind turbine can be the perfect
solution. Since most cottages are located near water the
thermal characteristics of the combination of water and air
usually provide an almost constant up-flow of air. This is
instrumental in making a wind turbine operate
successfully.
Again, as with the home system, the electricity
is generated in a direct current from the turbine. If you have
appliances in your cottage that are able to run on direct
current, you will need only to store the energy in special
batteries. These batteries are referred to as deep cycle or
deep cell batteries because they are designed to be charged and
discharged in small, steady, low amounts over their lifetime.
This is in contrast to what most people would think of as a
battery, such as the kind in your car, which provides a
powerful discharge to start your car then needs to be recharged
completely to perform again.
Depending on the demand, or draw, that your
specific setup requires, the batteries can be arranged and
connected in series or in parallel rows, or ‘banks’. These
battery banks are the reservoir for the electricity generated
during windy times by your wind turbine, making the complete
little system a self contained and self-supporting renewable
energy source for your home or cottage. The complete guide on how to
