DIY Solar
Power
If you have ever wondered what the end result of
our energy greed will be, then you have surely given thought to
how you as one homeowner can m ake a positive difference. The new
available technology of the
DIY solar power systems offered today can allow one home
owner to make a difference. If even half of us took up this
challenge we could change the world in a very real
way.
The realm of solar power generation has been the
exclusive territory of the engineering minded people of this
world. This has changed in the last few years to the point
where offshore manufacturing has produced inexpensive solar
panels designed for applications as varied as little LED lights
to accent our gardens, to massive solar panel arrays to power
our cities.
The typical homeowner can now have access to the
equipment needed to build functional, but simple, solar power
systems. There are only four main ingredients, with little
variation to all residential solar power
systems.

The first and most obvious is the solar panel.
This panel is the scientific wonder of the energy that can be
moved around within visibly solid objects. The panel is a
“sandwich” of sorts, of two types of elements that have
inherently different electrical properties. The sandwich is
threaded throughout with tiny conductive wires that carry the
electricity out of the panel.
The electricity that flows out of the panel
travels along a pathway that goes into a storage system, an
appliance or an apparatus that changes the direct electricity
flow to an alternating current that can be utilized by our
household appliances.
The electricity generated by the solar power
systems during the bright daylight hours, must be stored if it
will be needed after the sun goes down. The common and most
effective method of storage for this electrical energy is a
collection of special batteries. The batteries work by their
ability to build up electrical potential called voltage within
the chemistry of each cell, and store it for later use.
Deep cycle or deep cell batteries are specially
designed to allow a constant flow of energy in and out of their
cells without depleting or destroying their integrity. A normal
car battery cannot tolerate this type of exchange. The car type
battery has the ability to produce a large electrical output
but cannot sustain it. This is why on cold winter days you can
‘kill’ your battery just trying to start your car. These
batteries can be destroyed by this drain, reducing or
eliminating their ability to be
recharged.
Deep cycle batteries are designed to be
completely charged and completely discharged many times without
damage. This is what allows them to work within a solar power
home.
DIY solar power is now a
reality for all homeowners through the resources and knowledge
available now and with the addition of a converter to transform
the electricity stored in the batteries, and your energy
conservation efforts and energy efficient appliances, you will
complete your home solar power system.
